Meta launches new AI model as Zuckerberg champions open-weight push

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday the launch of a new open-weight AI model called Muse Glimmer, aiming to compete with Chinese rivals in the AI race. The smaller-than-average model is designed for agentic tasks and can run on consumer devices using a single graphics card. Open-weight models, which have publicly accessible components, are cheaper and more customizable than closed-source alternatives from tech giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Zuckerberg called for lower U.S. barriers to open-source AI models, arguing that American firms should not face additional restrictions when competing against Chinese startups. He emphasized that policy changes are necessary for domestic companies to lead in open-weight AI models, as Chinese developers currently hold several advantages due to fewer compliance requirements.

In addition to the new model, Meta revealed plans to expand its open-weight AI initiatives and announced the formation of a superintelligence team last year to enhance its position in the AI market. The social media giant's shares saw a 1% increase in premarket trading following the announcement.
