Melissa Barrera Says ‘I Was One of a Lot of People That Faced Consequences’ for Palestine Support

Melissa Barrera has commented on her termination from the "Scream" franchise due to her social media posts about Israel and Gaza. She stated that this was not her first experience facing consequences for her views, and it wouldn't be the last. Barrera was blacklisted by the series producers, but acknowledged that many others had also lost their jobs for speaking out against the conflict, emphasizing that people were being silenced to protect interests of power and money.

The actress spoke about her hope for a more compassionate world and the interconnectedness of humanity, urging people not to turn a blind eye to issues occurring far from their own borders. Barrera, who was a lead in the 2022 and 2023 revivals of "Scream VI," faced criticism from producers for her posts, which they deemed as antisemitism and hate speech. She condemned such hate and prejudice, vowing to continue advocating for peace, human rights, and freedom.

Barrera went on to discuss her upcoming projects, including her role as an executive producer on the documentary "Traces of Home," which follows a Mexican-Palestinian family. She highlighted the growing presence of Palestinian flags and graffiti in her native Mexico City, drawing parallels between the struggles of indigenous Mexican people and Palestinians. Barrera recently appeared on Latino USA to promote her ongoing Broadway production, "Titanic," which has received four nominations at the recent Tony Awards.
