Matiang’i dismisses division in opposition, urges focus on building united team

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has cautioned that unifying Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general election will be a challenging and protracted process. In an interview with Kameme TV on August 10, 2026, Matiang’i dismissed emerging disagreements among opposition leaders as natural political divisions. He emphasized that forming a coalition government is inherently difficult, requiring patience and ongoing negotiations among leaders with varying interests and ambitions.

Matiang’i urged political leaders, the media, and the public to prioritize building a broad opposition coalition rather than prematurely focusing on selecting a presidential candidate. He argued that excessive attention to the presidential contender could distract from the critical task of forging a united front. The United Alternative Government, currently under formation, does not yet have a designated leader or spokesperson representing all its members, as it transitions from a collection of politicians to a cohesive political team.

Matiang’i acknowledged that differences in opinion and strategy should not be immediately viewed as divisions, describing them as inevitable aspects of democratic politics where leaders hold diverse perspectives and emotions. His comments reflect the ongoing consultations among opposition parties and leaders to establish a cohesive political platform ahead of the upcoming elections.
