Leylah Fernandez eliminated from National Bank Open, ending Canadian singles hopes

Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez was knocked out of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers on Sunday in Toronto. The 30th-seeded Fernandez, representing Laval, Quebec, was the last Canadian remaining in the singles competition. She was defeated by Naomi Osaka, the 11th seed, with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This marked the end of Fernandez's pursuit of a second consecutive singles title at the national open.

Victoria Mboko, from Burlington, Ontario, won the tournament last year but was unable to defend her title due to injury. Osaka, who had previously lost to Fernandez's compatriot Victoria Mboko in the 2025 NBO final, will now face second-seeded Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Fernandez, who turned 23 on August 10, 2026, had won her first two matches against Renata Zarazua and fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva in straight sets.

However, she struggled against Osaka, who dominated the match by winning 76 per cent of points on her first serve, 75 per cent on her second, and was only broken once by Fernandez. Canada still has a chance to secure an NBO title in men's doubles, with the team of Alexis Galarneau and Duncan Chan set to face the third-seeded pair of Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in the quarterfinals on Monday.
