Labour force participation dips to 54.6%

India's labour force participation rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above fell to 54.6% in April-June 2026, a decline from 55.5% in the previous quarter, according to government figures released on Monday. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which gauges the share of the population that is employed, also dropped to 51.7% from 52.8% in January-March 2026, as reported by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) quarterly bulletin.

Rural areas experienced a sharper decline, with the LFPR falling to 56.9% from 58.2% quarter-on-quarter. Rural unemployment rose to 4.8% from 4.3% over the same period, although it remained unchanged from the 4.8% recorded in April-June 2025. Despite this, urban unemployment remained relatively stable at 6.7%, compared to 6.6% in January-March 2026.

Female labour force participation weakened during the quarter, dropping to 33.2% from 34.7%. The female WPR also slipped to 31.3% from 32.8%. Urban labour market indicators, however, remained comparatively stable, with urban LFPR remaining unchanged at 50.2% and the urban WPR at 46.8%, slightly lower than 46.9% in the previous quarter.

Urban female unemployment eased to 8.7% from 9.1%, while LFPR among urban men rose marginally to 75.3% from 75%. The survey highlighted a rise in regular wage and salaried employment, with its share in rural employment increasing to 16.1% from 15.5% and the urban share rising to 49.3% from 48.9%. Rural employment shifted further away from agriculture during the quarter, with agriculture's share falling to 52.9% from 55.8%.

The secondary sector expanded to 24.4% from 22.6%, while the tertiary sector's share rose to 22.7% from 21.7%.
