KUMACA@70: Ashanti Regional Minister warns students against mob justice as REGSEC probes Obuasi SHTS unrest

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has cautioned students to refrain from mob justice following violent disturbances at Obuasi Senior High Technical School on August 5, 2026. The school's headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, was assaulted by students during a protest triggered by allegations that the headmaster had buried a baby's body on the premises. Six students were arrested to assist with the investigation into the disturbances.

Dr Amoakohene, speaking at the 70th anniversary launch of Kumasi Academy, affirmed that the Regional Security Council would ensure accountability. He emphasized that students cannot justify destroying property and assaulting others, regardless of disagreements. He urged students to utilize their Student Representative Council (SRC) for redress, stating that mob justice is frowned upon by law.

The headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, was hospitalized after the incident. The school has a rich history of academic excellence and discipline, producing thousands of distinguished graduates across Ghana and beyond. The Chief of Nkwantakese, Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, urged students to uphold the school's legacy of hard work, respect, and order, emphasizing that protests should be the last resort, and school property must not be destroyed.
