Kalonzo to Ruto: There will be no handshake, no nusu-mukate

Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front, has firmly stated that there will be no political handshake or power-sharing deal with President William Ruto. He made this assertion in a statement issued on August 10, 2026, marking the beginning of the official 2027 General Election cycle. The former Vice President's United Alternative Government in Waiting aims to mobilize and organize supporters across the country in the lead-up to the election.

Kalonzo's opposition is focused on addressing issues such as the cost of living, healthcare, education, unemployment, and governance. He criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for its failure to deliver on healthcare reforms, education funding, and the rising cost of basic commodities. The opposition plans to present an alternative agenda through a 13-point "People's Budget," which includes initiatives like universal healthcare, free education, living wages, and employment opportunities.

Kalonzo also criticized the capture of constitutional institutions and called for greater independence of key bodies such as Parliament, the Judiciary, and the police. He urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to conduct the 2027 election independently, transparently, and fairly. Kalonzo ruled out any political arrangement similar to past handshake deals and emphasized that the only national conversation Kenyans should have with Ruto is at the ballot on August 10, 2027.
