Italian long jumper Furlani withdraws injured from Euros

BIRMINGHAM, England - Italy's long jump world champion Mattia Furlani has been forced to withdraw from the European championships due to an injury sustained during his opening qualifying attempt. The 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, who had been considered a favorite in the event, was unable to continue after clutching his right hamstring following a jump of 7.73 meters.

Furlani was subsequently taken away in a wheelchair. His compatriot Francesco Inzoli secured his place in the 12-man final with a wind-assisted leap of 8.34 meters. Furlani's injury poses a significant concern for his performance beyond the championships, as he is set to participate in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest next month.
