Indian students step up exam protests in Jharkhand

Indian students staged demonstrations in Jharkhand on Monday, marching towards the state assembly in an escalation of protests over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. Over a hundred police officers, equipped with barbed-wire barricades, guarded the assembly as protesters chanted slogans and walked towards the state seat of power.

The protests in Jharkhand, which began on July 29, are similar to those in Delhi. In Delhi, a youth-led "cockroach" movement forced the resignation of the national education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. In Jharkhand, the protests have lasted over a week, with at least six students on hunger strike, including 33-year-old student leader Devendra Nath Mahto.

Mahto has been fasting for more than a week, demanding an end to the use of a private company that conducts tests for state civil service examinations. The students are also demanding a federal police investigation into the conduct of the private company. Despite repeated talks between the protesters and the state government, no agreement was reached.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren attempted to defuse the protests by accepting some demands. However, several members of the civil service body overseeing the examinations have resigned. Soren stated, "Every problem can be resolved through dialogue," in a speech on Sunday.

The protests in Jharkhand mirror those in Delhi, reflecting the frustration of young Indians who view government examinations as a crucial pathway to employment in a nation where millions vie for limited public-sector jobs. In Delhi, the movement gained significant political traction when then education minister Pradhan resigned, turning examination integrity into a key political issue. The Jharkhand protests, however, are demanding change from the state government, which is in opposition to the BJP-led central government.
