Ilhan Omar questions whether Trump administration has used ICE to ‘surveil’ critics

Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is questioning whether the Trump administration has been using Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to "surveil" political opponents. This followed an incident where a DHS agent was stationed outside her monthly town hall meeting in Richfield, Minnesota. Omar demanded clarification from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on whether Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents have been used to monitor activities involving local, state, or federal officials in the state.

During the town hall, a Richfield police officer became suspicious of the agent's behavior and discovered that the vehicle's plates did not match government records. Upon questioning the agent, she claimed to be conducting an undercover drug operation, later acknowledging she was an HSI agent. Omar stated that the agent's presence posed a risk to the community and raised concerns about the Trump administration's use of ICE to surveil political opponents.

HSI, an arm of ICE, is a federal law enforcement agency tasked with investigations. Omar is seeking answers regarding the agent's presence at the community center, how the agent and her supervisor knew about the town hall, and what actions they took in response to this information.
