IDF strikes target in village of Al-Mansouri in southern Lebanon

The United Kingdom has signaled its willingness to back de-escalation and security measures in southern Lebanon following the planned exit of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). However, the Foreign Office refrained from confirming any troop deployment, stating that the UK is ready to support initiatives aimed at de-escalation and long-term security in the region.

This position emerged amid growing discussions on the future of security arrangements in southern Lebanon, with UNIFIL's mandate set to conclude by the end of 2025. Upon expiry, the Lebanese Armed Forces will take on the responsibility for deployment and control along the border area. The UK Foreign Office emphasized the importance of enabling UNIFIL to operate effectively and fulfill its mandate until the transition takes place.

The UNIFIL mission, established in 1978, has since been tasked with monitoring ceasefire agreements, supporting the Lebanese army's deployment in the south, and ensuring stability and humanitarian access. Concurrently, Lebanon and Israel have been engaged in negotiations over a framework agreement, which includes a phased Israeli withdrawal contingent upon Hezbollah's disarmament and an increase in Lebanese army presence and authority over Lebanese territory.

Despite ongoing discussions, Hezbollah remains adamant against disarmament, leading to a deadlock in implementing the framework and addressing Israeli control in southern Lebanon.
