In the Season 3 finale of the "House of the Dragon" prequel series, Emma D'Arcy’s character Rhaenyra takes an authoritarian turn after her daughter Helaena jumps to her death from their castle window. D'Arcy described this tragic event as cementing Rhaenyra's chosen path, condemning her to a life of solitude and isolation in her pursuit for power.

According to D'Arcy, Helaena's death marked the end of any relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent, who had already been on thin ice following Rhaenyra's execution of Alicent’s father, Otto. The battle for the Iron Throne in the series has seen Rhaenyra's authoritarian rule become increasingly ruthless, with her becoming isolated and skeptical of allies.
