Haze risk rises: Singapore task force ready if PSI tops 100

Singapore’s Haze Task Force is prepared to initiate its haze response strategies if air quality deteriorates to hazardous levels, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA). The NEA disclosed in a statement that they are closely monitoring the current haze situation and will provide updates should conditions change. As of 1pm on Sunday, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in Singapore's Central region was recorded at 81, which falls within the moderate range.

The NEA explained that should the 24-hour PSI surpass 100, indicating unhealthy air quality, they will issue daily haze advisories. These advisories will include the 24-hour PSI forecast, aiding the public in planning their activities for the following day.

Recent dry conditions have contributed to an increase in hotspots, with smoke plumes observed over portions of Sumatra and Kalimantan. These plumes have the potential to be carried towards Singapore due to prevailing southeasterly winds, particularly from southern Sumatra. The NEA has stated that these dry conditions are expected to persist throughout the upcoming week, which could heighten the risk of haze if the fires continue unabated.
