GPHA moves to ease Tema Port congestion

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced urgent operational measures to tackle growing congestion at the Port of Tema. The Authority assured stakeholders that efforts were underway to restore normal cargo flow and maintain efficient port operations. The congestion was largely driven by a significant increase in import volumes, a rise in exports of empty containers, and rising road traffic around the port enclave.

Similar congestion issues were being experienced at other ports across West Africa. To alleviate the situation, the GPHA activated enhanced operational interventions and placed stakeholders on heightened alert. The interventions include accelerating empty container evacuations through increased vessel calls, strengthening container transfer operations, deploying additional trucks, improving container handling and storage, and optimizing yard and traffic management systems.

The Authority urged importers, clearing agents, and cargo owners to expedite the clearance and evacuation of their consignments to create additional space, enhance operational efficiency, and facilitate smooth goods movement. They emphasized that prompt cargo evacuation was crucial to easing terminal pressure and supporting continuous trade flow.

The GPHA assured stakeholders of continued monitoring and implementation of necessary interventions to address the situation and restore normal operations swiftly. They expressed gratitude to the trading community and public for their patience and cooperation. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to a safe, efficient, and competitive port system supporting Ghana's international trade goals and broader economic growth.
