Govt targets one million affordable homes by 2035

KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Nga Kor Ming unveiled the National Housing Policy 2026-2035, pledging to build one million affordable homes by 2035. The policy, titled Humanising Housing, is rooted in the vision of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for national housing development. The plan comprises six focus areas, 17 strategies, and 59 action plans, targeting issues like soaring living expenses, housing supply imbalances, and stalled projects.

To bolster home ownership, the policy introduces Rent-to-Own, Shared Ownership, and the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme. Legal and industry reforms include a new Residential Tenancy Act, Strata Management Act amendments, and phased implementation of the Build-Then-Sell system. Protective measures like Option to Purchase and Sunset Clause are also incorporated.

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is emphasized to leverage existing public transport investments, aiming to expand transit access and curb private vehicle dependence, aligning with Malaysia's 2050 carbon-neutral goals. Minister Nga stressed the importance of optimizing public transport for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with disabilities.

Quality housing, he argued, is essential for nurturing prosperous families, cohesive communities, and sustainable national growth. The National Housing Policy represents a significant stride, marking the beginning of a transformative journey towards housing sustainability, he concluded. The Housing and Local Government Ministry pledges collaboration with state governments, local authorities, and industry stakeholders to ensure the policy yields tangible results by 2035.
