Forget DeepSeek. China’s real ‘Sputnik moment’ is happening on campus as American universities lose their advantage

A new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research reveals that Chinese universities, rather than Chinese firms, are driving innovation in critical technology areas. Harvard Business School's Josh Lerner and his co-authors analyzed nearly 14 million Chinese patents across advanced computing, space technology, AI, hypersonics, and biotech.

They found that universities accounted for over a quarter of inventions in these fields, more than eight times the U.S. rate. State-owned enterprises and the government contributed only 4% of the patents. Fewer than one in 10 Chinese critical technology patents involved individuals with U.S. work experience, challenging the notion that Beijing relies on returning U.S. talent for innovation.

The study suggests that the U.S. advantage in technology is fading, with Chinese universities and open-source models catching up in terms of quality and cost. The research highlights the reversed dynamics of innovation compared to the U.S., where academic patenting is more of a sideshow. As the U.S. cuts federal research grants, the gap in innovation and technological leadership may widen, posing a challenge to American tech leadership.
