Following Epic loss, Google has started hosting rival app stores in the Play Store

In a surprising turn of events following a significant loss, Google has begun offering alternative app stores within its Play Store, a decision driven by an ongoing antitrust lawsuit with Epic. Starting in the United States, users can now find and download Aptoide, a game-focused store, directly through Google Play. This move was mandated by Judge James Donato as part of a settlement that also required Google to reduce developer fees, mirror Google Play apps in other stores, and permit the use of alternative payment systems.

The stipulation regarding hosting third-party app stores in Google Play, however, was the most contentious for the tech giant. Google had initially reached a settlement with Epic that would have allowed the certification of third-party app stores for easier installation and use, but without hosting them in Google Play. Nevertheless, both parties abandoned this agreement following a court ruling that did not endorse it.

While this program is planned to roll out globally, Google is currently solely complying with the judge's directive in the US.
