Finding his voice again after laryngeal cancer

Ang Boon Kok, a 51-year-old man, faced a daunting challenge when he learned that his treatment for laryngeal cancer would require the removal of his voice box in 2016. The total laryngectomy left him adjusting to a new way of breathing and speaking, a fear that initially overwhelmed him. However, his outlook began to change when he connected with the Malaysia Laryngectomee Association, an organization that provided reassurance, practical guidance, and emotional support to both Ang and his family.

Meeting other survivors helped ease Ang's uncertainty about life after surgery, allowing him to draw on their experiences to reassure others preparing for a laryngectomy. After the surgery, Ang communicates using a voice prosthesis, a small one-way valve that allows him to create speech vibrations with his mouth and tongue. Although he initially struggled with this new form of communication, he persevered through practice and support.

Today, he travels with his family, enjoys a good quality of life, and even helps other newly diagnosed patients understand that life after the operation remains full of possibilities. Consultant otorhinolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon Dr Lum Sai Guan emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if hoarseness or changes in voice quality persist for more than three weeks, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
