Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria’s First Gold Medal at Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Olakunle Adewale Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson secured Nigeria's inaugural gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships by triumphing in the men's U-23 epee event at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos. The 16-year-old, who switched allegiance from England to Nigeria, outperformed three Indian rivals en route to the podium.

His victory in the final, where he defeated Asian champion Lokesh Vemani 15-5, brought jubilation to fans and marked a defining moment for Nigerian fencing. Esiovwa-Thompson showcased poise and skill against his more seasoned opponent, while India's Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya secured bronze medals. At just 16, he has already etched his name into Nigeria's sporting history as the first Nigerian to win a medal and gold at any international fencing event.

His journey to glory was characterized by dominance—beginning in Pool 4, he remained unbeaten to top the group, earning a semi-final spot. In that match, he overpowered South Africa's Karabo Mathobela 15-7 and India's Shivaansh Kapoor 15-2, before clinching his final victory over Vemani in a semifinal filled with home crowd support.
