Education Ministry supports Lithuania's initiative to remove works glorifying Russian imperialism from curricula

The Ministry of Education and Science in Ukraine has expressed support for Lithuania's plan to remove works that glorify Russian imperialism from school curricula. Instead, the ministry suggests incorporating the works of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. This proposal comes after Lithuania's Prime Minister suggested a review of national educational curricula, with a goal of removing the writings of Russian imperialist Mikhail Lomonosov.

The initiative aims to replace texts that celebrate the aggressive wars of the Russian Empire with the writings of Taras Shevchenko. The Ministry of Education in Ukraine welcomes this move, viewing it as a crucial step in distancing education from Russian imperial narratives. This becomes particularly significant amid Russia's ongoing full-scale war against Ukraine.

According to the ministry, Russia's aggression is fueled by imperial myths that have been perpetuated through education and culture for decades. Therefore, the ministry sees a thorough reassessment of educational content as vital for strengthening democratic societies and countering propaganda. The Ukrainian side particularly values the suggestion to introduce Lithuanian students to the works of Taras Shevchenko.
