DGP unveils infrastructure, tourism plans for erstwhile Maoist stronghold Karreguttalu

On Monday, the Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand journeyed to Karreguttalu Hills, a former stronghold of the CPI (Maoists) situated on the border between Telangana and Chhattisgarh. The DGP, in his visit, aimed to inspire the transformation of this region into a premier tourist destination, backed by enhanced infrastructure and connectivity.

During the tour, Anand inspected ongoing road construction projects in the lush forested landscape and raised the national flag. He highlighted that the area, which had witnessed decades of turmoil due to Left Wing Extremism (LWE), was now experiencing a newfound phase of tranquility and growth following relentless anti-Maoist operations.

Speaking about the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the Telangana Police, Greyhounds, Special Police Forces, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA units, and their Chhattisgarh counterparts, Anand noted that these concerted actions had effectively curtailed Maoist activities in the region.

Symbolically, he released white doves during the visit to signify the return of peace. Reflecting on the results of Operation Kagar, Anand disclosed that around 700 Maoists had surrendered, with several senior leaders killed during encounters and some integrating back into society. He further mentioned that only a few Central Committee members remained active nationwide.

The State government, Anand stated, is actively working on rehabilitation measures for surrendered Maoists, which include financial aid, land allotments, and livelihood opportunities to aid their reintegration into society while maintaining ongoing support. Emphasizing the tourism potential of Karreguttalu Hills, Anand elaborated that the government intends to develop the area in alignment with environmental and legal standards.

Road connectivity enhancements are underway; the tar road from Pamuru to Chalamadava has already been completed, and blacktopping works on the remaining stretch are imminent. Apart from road infrastructure, the administration plans to furnish the area with electricity, mobile connectivity, and essential civic amenities to enhance accessibility and stimulate tourism.

During the visit, Anand provided essential goods to the Gutti Koya community residing near the Pamuru camp and assured them of sustained government assistance. He also acknowledged the CRPF's significant role in the anti-Maoist operations, commending the dedication and professionalism of CRPF personnel, particularly those from the 196 Battalion, who have been serving in challenging conditions for extended periods away from their families.

Other officials present during the visit included Additional DGP Sanjay Jain, Inspector General Chandra Shekhar Reddy, Intelligence IG Karthikeya, Superintendent of Intelligence Branch (SIB) SP Sindhu Sharma, Mulugu Collector Borkade Hemanth Sahadeorao, Mulugu Superintendent of Police Sudhir Ramnath Kekan, District Forest Officer Vikas Meena, CRPF officials, and representatives from the Revenue, Tourism, and other departments.
