‘Deployment of SANDF to combat gangsterism a temporary measure’

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has announced that the deployment of South African National Defense Force (SANDF) members to five provinces to combat gangsterism and illegal mining will remain a temporary measure. President Cyril Ramaphosa authorized this deployment of 2 200 SANDF members, starting in March of the current year. However, critics and experts argue that using the military for civilian law enforcement provides only short-term stabilization.

Cachalia made these remarks in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg, following a shooting on Friday night that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two members of the Anti-Gang Unit. Cachalia emphasized that the government and police service are committed to addressing the issue. A significant budget of over a billion rand has been allocated to support policing efforts in areas affected by gang violence. Furthermore, General Mkhwanazi has been appointed to lead the fight against organized crime.
