Decades on, Merdeka spirit still burns bright among older Malaysians

In the community centre of Halaman Suri Sejahtera Negeri Perak, a group of senior citizens are keeping the spirit of Merdeka alive, demonstrating that their love for the country remains strong despite the decades that have passed. Names such as Ali, Siti, Muthu, Jarjit Singh and Ah Meng, once familiar to younger generations, now evoke memories of unity and friendship in older Malaysians.

With enthusiasm, the senior citizens sang Merdeka-themed songs, made Jalur Gemilang flags, and participated in a flag-assembling game during activities held at the community centre. This spirit of togetherness was evident as older Malaysians from various ethnic backgrounds participated in activities, rekindling the spirit of unity that forms the foundation of the country's harmony.

One participant, Bhajan Singh from Gunung Rapat, expressed his love for the country, reminiscing about his childhood celebrations of National Day. Similarly, Jaharah Hashim from Manong, Kuala Kangsar, highlighted the joy of participating in the activities with friends from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the spirit of Merdeka to appreciate the blessings of independence and national unity.

Programme coordinator Nur Hayatulasna Mohamed Fishal shared that the National Day-themed programme was held for the first time at the community centre to foster patriotism among senior citizens, expressing hope that it would inspire and strengthen community ties despite participants' advancing age and diminishing strength. The 2026 National Day and Malaysia Day (Hari Kebangsaan 2026) theme, 'Malaysia Madani: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati,' underscores the importance of shared prosperity and fair, comprehensive enjoyment of the country's blessings for the sake of harmony.
