Days of heavy rain leave at least 16 dead in Philippines

Heavy rain in the northern Philippines has resulted in at least 16 deaths, according to rescuers. The prolonged downpour, which equates to more than a month of rain in some areas, has caused floods, landslides, and accidents. The resort town of Baguio has seen seven fatalities after a rain-drenched mountainside collapsed, burying three houses.

Three individuals are still missing. Rescue operations continue, but are carried out manually due to the ongoing heavy rain. The safety of the rescue efforts is overseen by a designated safety officer to prevent further landslides. The weather forecast predicts that the rainfall in Baguio, four hours north of Manila, has surpassed the normal monthly average by 47%.

Another two deaths have been reported in other parts of Luzon from landslides, while a separate drowning incident, a tree falling on someone, and an electrocution are also contributing to the death toll. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon stated that floodwaters are gradually receding, but emphasized the need to address decades-old faulty flood mitigation interventions.

The Philippines, as the first major landmass in the path of the Pacific cyclone belt, experiences an average of 20 storms and typhoons annually, placing millions of people in vulnerable positions in a cycle of poverty. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme weather events to human-induced climate change.
