Colombia in state of emergency as quake kills 111

Colombia has declared a state of emergency following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck several cities, claiming at least 111 lives and causing extensive damage. The quake, which hit the coffee-producing region and the Pacific coast, sent terrified residents fleeing into the streets. Dentist Julian Pena described the shaking as "very, very strong" and recounted seeing hundreds of people praying in the streets of Quibdo.

Authorities launched a massive rescue operation and put hospitals on red alert, with Cali resident Andres Felipe Mejia volunteering to help pull out survivors from a pancaked multistory building. President Abelardo de la Esperidion, sworn into office just three days prior, declared the state of emergency and vowed that Colombia would "move forward together."

The quake was felt across the nation, including in the capital Bogota, where crowds rushed out into the streets in their pajamas. At a depth of 110km, the earthquake was likely caused by movement along a deep fault within the Nazca tectonic plate. Six airports suspended operations, and all upcoming professional football matches have been postponed.

International support from countries such as the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, and France has been offered, with the EU mobilizing its Copernicus satellite service to assist with rescue efforts.
