Colombia earthquake: Death toll rises to over 100

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck western Colombia early Monday, resulting in a death toll climbing to over 100 confirmed fatalities and at least 87 injuries. The epicenter was located on the eastern tip of the Choco province along Colombia's Pacific coast. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national state of emergency, prioritizing the rescue efforts to locate and aid any remaining trapped individuals.

Buildings collapsed in Cali and other cities across the country, with authorities reporting widespread damage to homes, schools, and health centers. The US and European Union have offered support to Colombia, with the latter utilizing their satellite service, Copernicus, to aid in rescue operations. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, further emphasizing the region's vulnerability to seismic activity within the world's most active belt of tectonic plates, known as the Ring of Fire.
