Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka make progress but Alex Eala's winning run comes to an end

Coco Gauff advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open in Toronto after defeating Russian teenager Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1. This victory marked Gauff's second appearance in the quarter-finals before turning 23, joining tennis legends Martina Hingis, who made 39 quarters in the 1990s, as the second player to achieve this milestone.

Gauff struggled at the start, losing her serve to open the match, but quickly turned things around, winning three of Korneeva's four service games in the first set. She continued this trend in the second set, winning all four of Korneeva's service games, ultimately securing the match with a 42-26 advantage in return points.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan made a strong comeback against Liudmila Samsonova in a grueling three-hour match that ended with Rybakina claiming a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Rybakina held her serve seven times and broke Samsonova seven times as well, ultimately capitalizing on her opponent's seven break points. Rybakina's victory secured her a fifth WTA 1000 quarter-final appearance this year.

In the late matches, Naomi Osaka of Japan continued her impressive performance by eliminating Canada's Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4, and Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, the 12th seed, overtaken rising Filipina sensation Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-0. Osaka's edge over Fernandez included a 7-1 ace advantage and a 76.3 percent first serve success rate (29 of 38), compared to Fernandez's 60 percent (21 of 35).

Bencic's victory came down to converting six of her ten breakpoint opportunities while Eala managed only two of four in their match. The final eight players have secured their spots in the championship round.
