Chinese AI drives price competition among US labs

The bar owner, Song De, explained that he provides "free tokens" or units of AI usage to attract patrons.

US AI leaders, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, have recently slashed their prices in an effort to attract more users and increase market share. OpenAI's latest lightweight model, Luna, now costs 80% less, while Anthropic unveiled a model that matches its most powerful system's performance at half the price. Meanwhile, Chinese AI startups are raising their fees as their offerings gain popularity among businesses and programmers worldwide.

DeepSeek, a Chinese startup whose V4 Flash model is currently popular on OpenRouter, plans to significantly increase its prices for programmers. Nonetheless, AI enthusiasts in Beijing can still enjoy free AI usage at AGI Bar, which features decorations and a menu filled with jokes related to AI technology.

The trend of price competition among AI models is fueled by the demand for cost-efficient and high-performance alternatives. Smaller US players, like Elon Musk's xAI and Meta, are also entering the market with cheaper options. Experts predict that the trend of cheaper AI models will continue to grow, benefiting downstream applications and the global AI industry.
