China’s biotech surge paves way for home-grown pharma powerhouse

China's biotechnology sector is experiencing a surge that could establish the nation as a global pharmaceutical powerhouse within a decade, according to analysts. Fu Wei, CEO of CBC Group, argues that China's cost-efficiency and speed in drug innovation give it an irreversible edge over the US, which previously held the sole global research and development ecosystem.

He predicts that a Chinese Big Pharma will emerge in the domestic market within the next ten years. However, he emphasizes that this transition will be a long-term process, requiring years of regulatory approvals, extensive product pipelines, and advanced technologies. Currently, China accounts for about 30% of the world's novel drugs under development, second only to the US, according to CCTV.

Iris Wang, an investment officer, notes that China's biotech sector has grown rapidly over the past two to three years, outpacing the West's awareness. China's progress in biotech is driven by systemic efficiency, including infrastructure, policy support, and a large talent pool, making it challenging for other countries to replicate this advantage in the near future.

The Chinese government has prioritized biopharmaceuticals as a crucial pillar industry in its latest five-year plan, pledging increased support for the sector, including faster regulatory approvals for critical therapies and improved clinical evaluation frameworks. Wang anticipates sustained momentum for Chinese drug innovators, particularly in frontier domains like AI-driven drug development, citing the need for systemic leadership across AI, biology, and lab operations.

She warns against the misconception that the US's dominance in AI will automatically translate to biotech leadership, emphasizing that China is building a unique paradigm to lead the next phase of drug innovation.
