The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has cautioned businesses that offer event-contract derivatives to avoid presenting prices in sportsbook-style "American odds" as it could lead to consumer confusion. This guidance could impact sports-focused prediction market products provided by prominent betting brands. The three-page staff letter expands on this concern, stating that the CFTC is wary of reports suggesting that certain regulated event-contract products are being marketed using the "American odds" format typically used in casino gambling. Instead, the agency prefers nominal or percentage pricing that accurately reflects market prices.

The warning comes as the CFTC intensifies its oversight of prediction markets, issuing earlier this year guidance that stressed exchanges' responsibility for surveillance, contract design, and market integrity amid the rapid expansion of sports prediction markets.
