CAP raises alarm over dumping at Sungai Merbok mangrove forest

The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has expressed deep concern over persistent solid waste dumping at the Sungai Merbok mangrove forest in Sungai Petani, Penang. CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader highlighted that their surveys had uncovered plastic bags and bottles at two spots within Kampung Segantang Garam. Despite repeated alerts to relevant authorities, the issue has failed to receive adequate attention for over four years.

CAP has since expressed frustration with the lack of effective action from the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) and the Kedah Forestry Department. Mohideen stressed that the waste not only deteriorates the mangrove forest and river ecosystem but also endangers nearby coastal waters, as plastic pollution can easily spread into the sea, contaminating areas and endangering the livelihoods of hundreds of local fishermen.

He warned that ongoing dumping could lead to further environmental degradation in the affected region and surrounding ecosystems, urging stricter law enforcement and more frequent monitoring. Mohideen also suggested installing more rubbish bins and signboards prohibiting littering, as well as launching public awareness campaigns on the environmental and health impacts of plastic waste.
