Canada flight cancelled after child refuses to wear seat belt

A Porter Airlines flight bound for Toronto from Victoria was grounded in August due to a young child refusing to buckle their seatbelt, reigniting discussions about child behaviour and airline safety protocols. The crew returned the aircraft to the terminal, and the passengers were rebooked for the next day, as the unsafe conditions prevented takeoff.

Porter Airlines spokesperson stated the parent and crew attempts to resolve the issue were unsuccessful, citing the need to protect all passengers, including the child, from potential turbulence-related hazards. Child aviation safety expert Lia Tuso agreed with the crew's decision, noting that unrestrained children can become projectiles similar to luggage during turbulent flight phases.

The incident sparked debate about airlines' tolerance for unruly passengers and the strictness with which parents should enforce safety rules. Some argued it was a reflection of permissive parenting, while others pointed out that children might be scared of flying and not attempting to cause disruptions. One passenger on the flight, Aryeh Kozuch, claimed the child had been frightened and had been hiding under the seat, not intentionally being disruptive.

The widespread reaction questioned the necessity of disrupting the entire flight for a single child, with many suggesting the family should have been removed. This situation echoes a 2018 incident involving Southwest Airlines, where a father and daughter were removed from a flight after a brief altercation. The airline involved, Southwest, confirmed their crew's decision was based on safety concerns.
