Can CATL’s battery breakthrough push flying cars closer to a commercial reality in China?

Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL), the world's leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, has taken a significant step in supporting the development of flying cars in China. CATL's aviation battery system successfully passed a critical safety test, setting the stage for mass production and eventual implementation in their Autoflight flying vehicles.

The company's commitment to decarbonizing the global economy extends beyond EVs, as it aims to expand energy solutions across various transport modes, including boats and aircraft.

CATL's cutting-edge battery technology features prismatic cells with a unique isolation mechanism that prevents heat from spreading, ensuring safety and reliability. This innovation resulted in a higher energy density of 350 watt-hours per kilogram, which is 50% greater than the average battery in electric cars. This increased energy density allows vehicles to cover longer distances on a single charge, making it an attractive option for commercial applications.

China has been a global frontrunner in the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, a critical component of its "low-altitude economy" vision. Current regulations permit passenger-carrying eVTOLs to operate below 1,000 meters in altitude. Seven eVTOL manufacturers are anticipated to begin delivering products before the end of the year, as reported by CCID Consulting.

In November, CATL's subsidiary Autoflight launched a waterborne vertiport to bolster the eVTOL sector. The company's advanced production lines boast an impressive automation rate of 95%, with thousands of quality checkpoints in place. CATL's executives expressed pride in the company's role as a world-class technology innovator, contributing significantly to green energy advancements.

CATL currently leads the global EV battery market with a 40.2% share in the first five months of 2026, according to SNE Research. The company also holds a 30% share of the world's energy-storage market. Goldman Sachs has highlighted CATL's scale, cost, and technology leadership, reinforcing its position as a potential leader in the transition to an integrated battery energy-storage system provider.

The demand for battery solutions is expected to grow, with Skeqi, a production equipment supplier for CATL and other leading Chinese EV battery manufacturers, expecting a more than 50% increase in 2026 orders.
