Berea, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie Spencer Fano secured the starting left tackle position following a confrontation with Pro Bowl edge rusher Jared Verse on Saturday during training camp. Coach Todd Monken confirmed on Monday that Fano would now exclusively line up with the first team after sharing responsibilities with Dawand Jones during the initial two weeks of camp.

Verse, acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the Myles Garrett trade, had been collaborating with Fano throughout the camp. Following a practice session last Tuesday, Verse engaged in a conversation with Fano about pass rush moves and positioning. The tension escalated during an 11-on-11 drill when the duo engaged in a scuffle after the whistle.

Verse forcibly removed Fano's helmet and tossed it aside, followed by both individuals grappling on the ground before coaches and players intervened. Monken emphasized the importance of not backing down against a Pro Bowler, highlighting Fano's need to stand up for himself as the starting left tackle. The incident between Fano and Verse was soon resolved, as they lined up against each other on the subsequent snap.

Monken acknowledged that if the competition between the players is one-sided, it raises concerns about the team's dynamics. Fano is not the only rookie to gain a spot on the first team; Denzel Boston, a second-round pick, also joined the first team at the X receiver spot. Monken praised Boston's performance and potential impact on the team's receiving options.

The Browns' starting quarterback situation remains uncertain, with Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders set to receive starts in the preseason, with Monken indicating that both players will get at least one start apiece.
