Bodies hanging from bridge revive violence in once-calm town in Mexico

After years of drug violence in Mexico's Zacatecas state, a small town named Pozos de Gamboa awoke one morning in July to discover five bodies hanging from a bridge. This shocking incident signaled that bloodshed had not entirely vanished from the region. The small town of 5,000 people, known for growing beans, is now gripped with fear as no one dares to venture out after dark. Zacatecas is a key player in the drug trade due to its strategic location linking central Mexico to the north and west, facilitating the smuggling of cocaine and drugs to the United States. The state of 1.6 million inhabitants had become accustomed to narcotics-related violence, with rival gangs battling each other, leading to daily murders and disappearances. However, in 2025, the government reported a significant decline in killings, falling from around 1,300 in 2022 to 144.

The drop in violence was attributed to improved cooperation between state and federal law enforcement agencies. But the calm was shattered on July 18 when the five bodies were found hanging from the bridge, along with five more bodies discovered elsewhere in the town. Mexico's two dominant drug cartels, Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa, are vying for control of Zacatecas because of its strategic importance in the US-bound drug trade.

Prosecutors initiated an investigation into the killings, and the state government pledged a swift and forceful response, requesting assistance from the army and National Guard to bolster security in the town. A resident of Pozos de Gamboa, fearful for their safety, likened the situation to a ghost town, describing the eerie silence on the roads even after dark. The once-bustling streets are now eerily quiet, with people largely absent after sunset.

The town's residents have suffered greatly from the drug violence, with many losing relatives or acquaintances to the brutal crimes. These killings have been described as senseless by the locals, who insist that no cause justifies such senseless acts. The bridge where the bodies were found in July has been a notorious site for drug cartel messages in the past, with bodies hanging from bridges or dumped in public spaces as intimidation tactics against rivals and security forces.

The shocking incident has drawn the attention of leftist President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has deployed soldiers to violence-ridden states like Sinaloa and Michoacan in her efforts to combat the cartels. The Mexican government is facing mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump to take direct action against the drug cartels, aiming to curb the flow of drugs into the United States.
