Benue Civil Protection Guards arrest two over alleged assault on woman

In Benue State, two individuals, Terwase Aye Abere and Mayange Aondowase, have been apprehended by the Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG) for allegedly assaulting a woman during a market dispute. The victim, who was hospitalized following the incident, claims she faced resistance from the suspects when she refused to pay a market levy.

According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began after the woman expressed her inability to pay. The BSCPG's Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, Chief Dr Joseph T. Har, ordered the arrests following a report from an eyewitness. Both suspects, claiming to be volunteers under the supervision of Ward Commander Mr. Tiletswen, stated they were instructed by their commander and another individual, Mr. Ipker, to arrest the woman under threat of force.

Dr. Har has called for the interrogation of the mentioned individuals and further investigation of the suspects by the Police Headquarters. He emphasized that those who misuse security personnel's authority to harass or intimidate citizens will face legal consequences. The victim is receiving medical treatment, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
