Assam Flood Death Count Reaches 100, Over 1.3 Lakh People Affected

GUWAHATI, India — The flood crisis in northeastern Assam state, India, remained serious on Monday, with the death toll rising to 100 after two additional fatalities occurred overnight, officials reported. Multiple rivers, including the Brahmaputra, remained at dangerous levels, increasing the likelihood of further flooding in susceptible regions, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

Intense monsoon rains over several days caused rivers, primarily the Brahmaputra, to overflow, submerging villages, demolishing homes, and displacing nearly 300,000 people into government-run relief camps, according to officials. The floods, which began last month, displaced over 700,000 individuals and submerged extensive farmlands, as well as damaged roads and local infrastructure.

While many residents have started returning to their homes as floodwaters recede, at least 49,000 flood-affected residents continue to reside in 125 relief camps and relief distribution centers, officials noted. Authorities continued to carry out relief and monitoring activities, assessing the extent of damage and the requirements of affected populations.

The floods also severely impacted livestock, with a large number of cattle lost, posing challenges for rural communities and raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks. As the waters began to recede in certain areas, many families returned to homes buried under thick layers of silt, adding to the difficulties of recovery.

Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika directed officials to expedite damage assessments to enable the government to provide financial assistance for rehabilitation. He stated that approximately 500,000 affected individuals had already received interim monetary compensation.
