Andy Reid 'Leaning Against' Playing Patrick Mahomes in Preseason

The Kansas City Chiefs are considering playing Patrick Mahomes sparingly during their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 15. Head coach Andy Reid stated that there is a high probability he won't play Mahomes in that game, with the likelihood increasing for subsequent preseason contests. Reid explained that the team is favoring new backup quarterbacks Justin Fields and Garrett Nussmeier, who need to gain more experience with the Kansas City system.

Fields, Mahomes' primary backup, is entering his rookie season after being traded to the Chiefs this offseason. Nussmeier, a seventh-round draft pick, will also benefit from increased playing time during the preseason. Following the Rams game, the Chiefs will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks in additional preseason matchups before opening their regular season against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
