12-year-old Kumamoto violinist performs at New York’s Carnegie Hall

Kumamoto, Japan – Twelve-year-old violin prodigy Sora Iwai has taken the stage at Carnegie Hall in New York, just months after his hometown was struck by a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake on July 28. The young musician, in the sixth grade, played Franz Waxman’s "Carmen Fantasie" in front of an audience of around 250 people at the prestigious concert venue on August 1.

Sora, whose parents are both string musicians, started playing the violin at the tender age of two and has been honing his skills ever since. He regularly performs at various events, including concerts at Tsuruya Department Store in Kumamoto. When word got out about the earthquake, Sora's dream of performing at Carnegie Hall became even more meaningful, as he felt it was his duty to contribute to the recovery efforts in his home prefecture.

Upon completing his performance, Sora drew loud applause from the audience, who praised his interpretation of the piece, noting his deep understanding of the emotion conveyed in "Carmen Fantasie". Spanish-born pianist Felix Ardanaz, who accompanied Sora on the piano, expressed his admiration for the young musician's talent and musicality.

The Manhattan International Music Competition, which Iwai won first place in the under-18 division, aims to showcase outstanding young musicians from around the world, with its final goal being to provide these talents with opportunities to perform in major concert halls.

Sora's mother, Fumi Iwai, expressed her pride in her son's accomplishment, stating that her son's performance at Carnegie Hall was a testament to his extreme talent and musical abilities for his age. She hopes to see him play in many more concert halls in the future. Despite the recent earthquake, Sora's performance at Carnegie Hall proved that his dreams are still alive and thriving, inspiring both his fellow musicians and the people of Kumamoto as they work towards rebuilding their community.
