$1 million bribe: ‘Former minister Kwabena Donkor denied categorically that he had received any money from Mr Berko’ – Vormawor

Former Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, has vehemently denied any knowledge or involvement in bribery allegations tied to the US case of Mr Asante Berko. In a statement issued by his counsel Kobina Tahir Hammond, the denial was emphatic and categorically denied any involvement. Dr Donkor admitted that his Ministry of Power had negotiated with ASKA Energy for the generation of electric power in Ghana during a period of power shortages known as 'Dumsor'.

The statement also mentioned that a technical team visited Istanbul, Turkey, to inspect equipment for power generation in Ghana as part of regular pre-shipment inspection practice.

However, the statement clearly stated that Dr Donkor never met Mr Asante Berko, who is central to the bribery scandal. He emphasized that there was no communication with Mr Berko at any point, and he never discussed personal benefits with him or any other person. Additionally, the statement insisted that Dr Donkor never received any form of money or personal benefit from Mr Berko or anyone else. Any person or persons who allegedly made criminal demands in his name did so for their own benefit, the statement added.

Dr Donkor also commented on the US trial evidence, asserting that he does not comprehend how evidence linking him to demanding or receiving money could have been presented. He firmly rejected any notion that his involvement in the case could be proven, stating that he had never received any money or personal benefit from Mr Berko or anyone else.

Cavendish Chambers, led by K.T Hammond, warned that any publication or statement that could tarnish the reputation and integrity of Dr Donkor would face immediate legal action. The Attorney-General's office has announced plans to investigate individuals implicated in the bribery scheme in Ghana, following the conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko in the United States.
