Woman, 26, Thought Her Leg Was Just Itchy, Then Came Nightmare Diagnosis

Chloë Bourgoin, a 26-year-old woman from Connecticut, has shared her harrowing experience of being diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Bourgoin, who has multiple moles on her body, had never prioritized regular skin checks and last underwent a check-up in 2018. Unaware that itching could be a warning sign of skin cancer, her journey took a terrifying turn when she started experiencing itching in her lower leg around the end of 2025.

This symptom led her to research online and realize the severity of her situation, prompting an appointment with her dermatologist. The diagnosis confirmed her worst fears - she had malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer typically developing in sun-exposed areas. Skin cancer is prevalent in the United States, with diagnoses rising over the past three decades.

Factors like excessive UV radiation exposure, indoor tanning, and a personal history of the disease increase the risk. Interestingly, Bourgoin's family history of melanoma on her maternal side further heightened her risk. After a biopsy and excision surgery, which removed the melanoma and a border of healthy skin to prevent recurrence, Bourgoin's recovery has been successful, and she is now cancer-free. She expressed gratitude for surviving this nightmare.
