What the Makkah Agreement means for Syria

On August 9, 2026, the Makkah Mutual Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan was highlighted as a significant development for Syria. As allies of Damascus, the three nations are poised to bolster Syria's security landscape after years of conflict. The agreement's significance is further emphasized by the symbolism of Makkah, considered the holiest city for Muslims, and its historical role in trade and commerce.

Each signatory brings unique strengths to the table - Saudi Arabia's Islamic standing and economic weight, Türkiye's military prowess and NATO membership, and Pakistan's armed forces, nuclear capabilities, and diplomatic ties.
