Western Cape police increase deployments after three deadly shootings

Three deadly shootings in Cape Town over the weekend claimed eleven lives and left three others injured. Western Cape police have responded by increasing their police presence in the affected communities of Langa, Khayelitsha, and Gugulethu. The incidents occurred within hours of each other, beginning late Saturday night and continuing into the early hours of Sunday.

The first shooting took place at around 10:45pm in Winnie Mandela Street in Phase 3, KwaLanga, where four men and a woman were killed. Five minutes later, three more men - aged 25, 31, and 35 - were gunned down in TR Section, Lingelethu West, in Khayelitsha. The violence escalated into the early hours of Sunday when three more people were shot dead in the Barcelona informal settlement of Gugulethu. Two men and a woman lost their lives at approximately 4:10am, with two others sustaining injuries.

Detectives from the Provincial Serious Violent Crimes Unit are currently investigating the shootings. The motive behind the attacks remains unknown, as police continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the events. Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi, the Western Cape Police Commissioner, will be visiting the impacted regions and supervising the increased police deployments.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shootings. Police are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information that could expedite the investigations.
