West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari orders fresh probe into RG Kar rape-murder

West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a fresh investigation into the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, marking the second anniversary of the incident. Ratna Debnath, the victim's mother and now a BJP MLA, requested the fresh probe. Adhikari stated that the government acted upon her request and initiated the investigation under the Special Commission Act, 1952.

He accused the police of failing to fulfill their duty and directed a separate probe into alleged lapses during the victim's cremation. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front held a clinic for underprivileged individuals at Chitpur in north Kolkata to demand justice for the victim. The Junior Doctors’ Front also organized a memorial march for the deceased.

State Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay announced a separate investigation by the health department, which would summon everyone present at the hospital on the night of the incident and interview the victim's teachers and professors. The investigation will comprehensively examine shortcomings in the hospital's internal security and administrative framework.

Asfaqullah Naiya, a member of the Abhaya Mancha, expressed disappointment in the government's silence on the case and emphasized the need for proper justice.
