'We are strongest when we place our people above all else': Pritam Singh's National Day Message

In its official 2026 National Day message, the Workers' Party (WP) emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of Singapore's people over all else. Singapore's founding tale of Sang Nila Utama, whether fact or fiction, serves as a reminder of the nation's origins rooted in selflessness for the collective good. WP Secretary-General Pritam Singh stated that in these challenging times, with geopolitical pressures and economic uncertainty, the nation's strength lies in placing shared future aspirations above individual desires and putting people first.

He added that robust safety nets are essential, not only as short-term support during crises but as long-term structural safeguards that ensure families can face difficulties with dignity. Singh urged that all workers should receive fair wages reflecting the true value of their labor, and workplaces should foster an environment of fairness and respect.

The party also called for comprehensive support for those affected by retrenchments, both before and after, as well as assistance for caregivers, lower-income individuals, and persons with disabilities. WP concluded by encouraging Singaporeans to appreciate diverse viewpoints and differing political perspectives when expressed with mutual respect and shared purpose.

The Workers' Party pledges to continue its role as a steadfast and constructive opposition, presenting innovative ideas, probing questions, and policies that enhance the lives of every Singaporean. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also shared his National Day message on August 8, addressing concerns about geopolitical uncertainties and artificial intelligence, and announcing a comprehensive review of family support systems in Singapore.
