Trump suffers first-round defeat at China Open

Judd Trump, the current world number one, faced a surprising loss in the opening round of the China Open, a snooker tournament that has rejoined the World Snooker Tour schedule after a two-year hiatus. The 36-year-old English player, who previously won the event in 2011 and 2016, battled through a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Thailand's Noppon Saengkham, a player ranked 45th globally.

Trump battled back from a 3-2 deficit, but his opponent ultimately won three consecutive frames to seize control of the best-of-11 match. A match-high break of 120 boosted Saengkham to a 5-2 lead, and the Thai wrapped up the frame with a break of 78. The match concluded with a score of 6-3 in Trump's favor. Despite Trump's previous success at the China Open, he has not claimed a ranking tournament since February 2023.

The China Open will be part of the upcoming World Snooker Tour calendar, with its inaugural host being Taiyuan, a city located 310 miles southwest of Beijing. To maintain his position as world number one, Trump must secure victory in the Wuhan Open later in the month and rely on favorable results in other tournaments. Zhao Xintong currently holds the second position in the rankings, close behind Neil Robertson and Wu Yize.

Trump's fellow seeded players, Barry Hawkins, Mark Williams, and Ding Junhui, also suffered early exits, with Hawkins falling to Liu Hongyu, Williams to Zhou Yuelong, and Ding to David Gilbert. The tournament's winner will earn a prize of £250,000, while the runner-up will receive £100,000.
