Transporters’ strike threatens industry, exports as movement of over 400,000 goods-carrying vehicles suspended

Pakistan's nationwide strike by goods transporters and oil tankers is causing disruption to industrial and export supply chains, with operators threatening to continue until talks with the government conclude on Monday. Over 400,000 goods-carrying vehicles, from small to large, have been suspended from movement since Saturday until the outcome of the meeting with ministers concerned with petroleum, transport, and ports.

The strike is over multiple issues, including dissatisfaction with the government's recently introduced daily fuel price mechanism, which is creating problems for transporters and industries. They are requesting the government to restore the monthly fuel price mechanism and reduce withholding tax on transporters from 7pc to 2pc.

Industrialists warn that prolonged disruption could halt production, derail production schedules, jeopardise export commitments, and affect employment and the overall economy. The Association of Industry President Abdul Rehman Fudda called for urgent intervention from the government to resolve the dispute through negotiations with the transporters, warning of the dire consequences if the strike continues.
