This former notorious red-light district is now one of the world’s top AI hubs

The former notorious red-light district of King's Cross in London has transformed into one of the world's top AI hubs. This shift began in 2016 when DeepMind, then newly acquired by Google, moved into the area, attracting a flood of AI startups seeking to be near the Google DeepMind magic. Today, King's Cross, also known as the "Knowledge Quarter," is home to prominent AI companies like OpenAI, Meta, Isomorphic Labs, Cusp AI, Wayne, Recursive, Synthesia, and Anthropic.

The European Technology Network (ETN) recently moved into a new office nearby, and University College London sits just around the corner. The neighborhood has seen a significant influx of AI talent and startups, with around 3,600 AI startups in London, collectively raising $12.1 billion out of the $14.8 billion raised in the city since late July.

King's Cross has experienced a substantial rise in prime rents, with an 18% increase over the past three years. The vacancy rate for conventional office space has dropped to just 0.9%, indicating strong demand. This surge in demand has led to discussions about AI sovereignty, as Anthropic's shutdown of access to Mythos and Fable earlier this summer prompted many in the ecosystem to recognize the importance of self-reliance in AI capabilities and infrastructure.

The area's transformation from a seedy neighborhood to a global AI hub has been remarkable. Founders can now access London in 45 minutes and Paris in two hours to source talent or strike deals. The ecosystem has evolved, with startups like Wayve, Synthesia, and Anthropic all calling King's Cross home. The area's appeal lies in its proximity to the airport, investors, and a diverse talent pool, making it an attractive location for AI companies to establish themselves and scale.
