Things to know about Jason Arday, Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in plagiarism row

Jason Arday, the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, has resigned amid a plagiarism controversy. Arday, a sociologist, became prominent for his work on race, education, inequality, and diversity, and was appointed professor of sociology of education in 2022. At the age of 37, he became the youngest Black professor at Cambridge.

His journey to academia is marked by challenges; he was diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay at the age of three, and only started speaking at the age of 11. Arday's 2015 PhD from Liverpool John Moores University, titled "An Exploration of Peer-Mentoring Among Student Teachers to Inform Reflective Practice Within the Context of Action Research," sparked controversy after plagiarism allegations were raised by Nathan Cofnas.

These allegations were initially dismissed by Liverpool John Moores University but led to further scrutiny over Arday's academic work. Despite denying plagiarism, Arday admitted to errors in his research methodology and subjective commentary. His resignation came after Cambridge launched an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments following new information.

In his statement, Arday acknowledged facing intense public scrutiny and personal attacks, expressing that the personal cost had become too great for him to continue.
