Taste of the Danforth draws huge crowds despite safety fears

Thousands of individuals flocked to Danforth Avenue during the second day of the Taste of the Danforth street food festival in Toronto's Greektown, despite heightened security measures. The festival, which returned after a two-year absence, featured a diverse array of ethnic cuisines and live entertainment. Toronto police, fire, and paramedic personnel, along with private security guards, patrolled the area between Broadview and Jones Avenue.

Festival-goer Dadir Yusuf expressed mixed feelings about the event's safety, noting that while the shooting at Salsa on St. Clair was concerning, the atmosphere now felt lively and inviting. Organizer Howard Litchman emphasized the festival's commitment to safety, stating that security arrangements had been enhanced as a precautionary measure.

Despite the incident on July 11, festivalgoers like Shaleena Clements and Saqeeb Hassan maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing that the overall safety of the city had not changed significantly due to the shooting. Erwin Smith, who traveled from Midland, Ont., to attend the festival, also expressed optimism about the event and its atmosphere.
